My Take

Gotta

order:

Smoked kefta hummus with pomegranate molasses, pita bread, smoked dirty chai, baklava croissant

Vibes:

Extremely crowded, modern, yellow, not good for sitting with laptops (they don’t allow it), energetic

Notes:

YELLOW is owned by the same creators behind Albi, in Navy Yard- a Michelin-starred Mediterranean small plates restaurant that I rated as one of my highest DC meals in March 0f 2024. Needless to say, my expectations for this affiliate cafe in Georgetown were HIGH, but YELLOW absolutely exceeded them. They serve breakfast sandwiches and shakshuka until 11, but with their out-the-door line, we missed the window and had their more lunch-oriented menu instead. They run an absolute operation out of YELLOW, but it was almost just a little too crowded for me, and it’s not a spot I would sit and hang out- they actually don’t even let people sit with laptops.

As far as what we ate- in the wise words of my mom “this is the single best hummus I’ve had in my life.” And honestly- yes, it was THAT good. Their fluffy, za’atar covered pitas are the perfect vessel for the pita (or just to eat by themselves). We also got a sampling of their pastries and the twice baked baklava croissant was my favorite- stuffed with baklava filling!!! The olive oil cake was very different and super moist, and the za’atar croissant stuffed with labneh wasn’t like anything I’d had before. It wasn’t quite what I was feeling in the moment with its savory profile, but was very interesting. I also ordered the chicken shawarma stuffed pita, which had the perfect combo of spices, sauces, roasted chicken, and fluffy pita.

Special note of love for my spiced dirty chai- being such a spice-froward Mediterranean spot, I knew it was going to be extremely flavorful and it was absolutely amazing!!
