I have to give a big apology to Tony’s pizza and also clear one thing up- I thought Tony’s Slice House and Tony’s Pizza were serving up the same slices and I was SORELY mistaken. I tried Tony’s slice house and was disappointed by the greasy, crunchy crust, basic slice I was handed through the window. I went almost the rest of my time in SF holding this as my picture of Tony’s pizza, only to learn in my last week that Tony’s Pizza the restaurant does, in fact, serve and entirely different pizza experience. Little did I know, Tony’s traditional Margherita Pizza was a world pizza cup winner in Naples, Italy, AND they only serve 73 a day. I ended up getting lunch here by myself on my last day living in SF and ate an entire Neapolitan pizza by myself, so I could clear Tony’s Pizza’s name.
And clear it I did. It was a fantastic Neopolitan pizza, with the doughy, puffy crust I love on my ‘Za, flavorful sauce, and just the eighth amount of cheese. Was it the best pizza I’ve ever had? No- that’s reserved for Gusta Pizza in Florence and my hometown favorite (which has actually also won international pizza awards), but I will say it’s high up there. I wouldn’t call Tony’s pizza a ‘must try’ in the city- there are too many exceptional restaurants to put Tony’s on the list, but if you’re looking for good pizza in the city, that’s where I’d send you.
