Penny Roma is the sister restaurant to renowned SF Italian staple, Flour and Water. Rumor on the street is that Penny Roma is the same quality noods with half the difficulty getting seated. My dad and I did not have difficulty getting a seating, so we went in eager to confirm the food element of said rumor as well. Needless to say, expectations were high. Unfortunately, Penny Roma did not quite live up to the hype I have heard about Flour and Water’s little sister.
Don’t get me wrong, their food was good. Everything we had was solid, but nothing really wowed me. It wasn’t anything super memorable, and being in a city with exceptional Italian food, it’s probably not a place I would return. I tried their focaccia, spring tortelli, tagliatelle bolognese, and a mushroom veg situation. I remember the focaccia being my favorite thing, which is always a bit of a bummer when the bread overshadows the rest.
Overall, Penny Roma is good, but there are lots of places I would recommend ahead of this spot.
