Mister Jiu’s is famous for their unique position as the ONLY Chinese restaurant with a Michelin star in AMERICA (crazy, right!?). I also snagged a red exactly one month before visiting and watched them all get taken up within minutes. Needless to say- expectations were incredibly high. Unfortunately this swanky Chinatown spot did not quite live up to expectations.
Don’t get me wrong- it was phenomenal. However, for it to be the ONLY Chinese Michelin-starred restaurant, it wasn’t quite at the level I thought it was going to be. Part of the reason may be because I pre-paid $160 for their whole Peking duck with hoisin sauce and thought about it for the entire month leading up to my date with Mr. Jiu, only to discover that I’d had better in my hometown.
I will give a shoutout to their scallion bread- THAT was something special. I almost ordered a second one after my first bite (P.S. literally served with warm butter dolloped on top that melts down the sides in butter rivers). Our fried rice and rolled chow fun were also great. This is leading me to think the tasting menu/smaller a la cart may be the way to go here.
